The problem
A restaurant owner received a complaint about a chef's behaviour towards younger staff. Under the Worker Protection Act, employers now have a positive legal duty to prevent sexual harassment, and this business had no policy, no training, and no idea of its exposure.
What I did
I handled the complaint properly and sensitively first: investigation, hearing, outcome. Then I fixed the root cause, with a sexual harassment policy, prevention training for managers, and clear reporting routes for staff.
The outcome
The complaint was resolved fairly for everyone involved, and the business can now evidence the reasonable steps the law requires, which is exactly what a tribunal looks for.
